Twenty-three-year-old Vikram was usually a grounded young man, but
over the course of a few weeks, he completely changed. He suddenly
stopped sleeping, yet instead of being exhausted, he was fuelled by a
restless, explosive energy. He spoke incredibly fast, jumping wildly
from one idea to another, and began making grand, unrealistic plans to
start multiple huge businesses all at once. He drained his savings,
spending reckless amounts of money, and became fiercely angry if anyone
tried to slow him down. He even began to tell people that he had
special, superhuman powers.

His family was deeply confused and frightened. Because they had no
map for what they were seeing, they tried to explain his erratic
behaviour using the only terms they knew. Some older relatives whispered
that he must be possessed by an evil spirit, while others angrily
insisted he was just being an arrogant, spoiled child who needed strict
discipline.

The crisis reached a breaking point when Vikram stopped eating and
sleeping almost entirely; his physical brain was running an engine with
no brakes. Finally, a wise relative stepped in and insisted they take
him to a psychiatrist immediately.

The doctor listened, observed Vikram, and gave the chaos a clear
medical name: **Bipolar I Disorder, experiencing a severe manic
episode.**

The psychiatrist explained a crucial fact: Vikram was not possessed,
nor was he behaving badly on purpose. His brain chemistry was simply
trapped in a dangerous overdrive. The treatment plan was highly
practical:

-

>

**The Biological:** Vikram was prescribed specific
medications (a mood stabiliser and an antipsychotic) to act as a
chemical brake pedal and cool down his overheated nervous system.

-

**The Educational:** The doctor sat down with the
family for "psychoeducation," teaching them the actual science of
bipolar disorder so they could recognise the signs and stop taking his
manic behaviour personally.

**The Core Lesson** Over the next few weeks, the
medicine did its job. Vikram’s sleep normalised, the reckless spending
stopped, and his clear, steady thinking returned. With ongoing therapy
and a family that finally understood how to support him, he successfully
finished his studies and found steady work.

Looking back, his mother shared a profound realisation that captures
the heart of mental healthcare: *"We wasted so much time being angry
and blaming him for his behaviour. Once we stopped judging his character
and realised he was fighting an illness, everything changed. We finally
got our son back."*
