Samira, twenty-four, in Karachi, felt tired, anxious and restless.
She searched her symptoms at night and read comment threads from
strangers. By morning she was sure she had several illnesses and decided
one forum's advice was the cure.

Her worry grew. She read more, slept less, and stopped talking to her
friends about it. A frightening post suggested she had a serious
condition, and she spent days convinced of it.

Her sister saw her pale face and asked what was going on. Samira
showed her the tabs. Her sister said a comment thread was not a clinic
and offered to find a qualified clinician. Samira booked a private
online appointment with a registered doctor. The doctor listened,
checked her health, and gave her a real plan. She learnt that
teletherapy can be useful when the platform is private and the clinician
is qualified.

The doctor's check showed ordinary tiredness linked to poor sleep and
anxiety, and she suggested talking therapy. Samira shut her laptop at
ten each night. She told her friend how scared she had been, and the
friend admitted she did the same. Samira says she still searches
sometimes, but now she writes the question down and takes it to her
doctor instead of a thread.

### How to recognise it

-

Hours searching symptoms online, especially at night.

-

Growing fear and certainty about illness after reading threads.

-

Following unverified advice and avoiding real clinicians.

-

Poor sleep, anxiety and pulling away from people.

-

Feeling worse after each search, not better.

### What this story explains

This story shows that internet self-diagnosis is unreliable and that
a comment thread is not a clinic. It also shows that qualified
teletherapy on a private platform can help.

### Probable root causes

-

Anxiety that looks for certainty and finds frightening answers.

-

Algorithms that feed more of the same content.

-

Fear, stigma or cost that keep people from clinics.

-

Night-time searching that worsens sleep and worry.

### What to do

1.

Set a limit for health searches and stop at night.

2.

Write down your symptoms and how long they have lasted, to share with
a clinician.

3.

Choose a registered doctor or qualified therapist, in person or
online on a private platform.

4.

Check that the platform is private and the clinician is
qualified.

5.

Treat the anxiety itself: sleep, movement, talking, and professional
care.

6.

Do not start any medicine or remedy based on a forum.

### Whom to consult

-

Family doctor for a proper check.

-

A qualified counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist, in person or by
video.

-

A pharmacist for general medicine questions, not for diagnosis from a
forum.

### Do and don’t

**Do** | **Don’t** |

Ask a professional. | Do not trust anonymous advice. |
Keep a symptom diary. | Do not diagnose yourself or friends. |
Check qualifications. | Do not change treatment because of a thread. |
Limit night searching. | Do not share private health details in public. |
Talk to someone you trust. | Do not search when anxious at night. |

### How to behave and
communicate

-

Sister: "I can see you are scared. Let us ask a doctor, not a
thread."

-

Use a calm, kind voice and avoid mocking the worry.

-

Listen to what she read and how it felt.

-

Offer to book or go with her.

-

Praise the step to ask for help.
