Neha, twenty-nine, was always exhausted. On the outside she was the
perfect friend, daughter and employee: always smiling, always agreeing,
never saying no. Inside, she was drowning in resentment and constant
worry. She feared that if she ever stated her own needs or said no,
people would leave her. Carrying this alone, she secretly believed
something was deeply wrong with her.

Exhausted, Neha finally started Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Her therapist did not just offer a sympathetic ear to let her vent; they
got to work on the actual mechanics of her anxiety.

First, they identified the core, automatic thought driving her fear:
*"If I say no, they will hate me."*

Next, using the tools of CBT, they put that terrifying thought on
trial. Neha was given small, practical homework assignments. She
practiced saying a polite "no" to minor, low-stakes requests at work and
at home, treating each refusal as a scientific experiment to test if her
catastrophic thought was actually true.

To her surprise, the sky did not fall. People did not hate her; they
simply adjusted. Over twelve structured sessions, Neha learned the
difference between being aggressive and being assertive. She learned how
to set clear, firm boundaries without apologising for her own
existence.

**The Core Lesson** As her boundaries grew stronger, her
resentment faded, and her chronic anxiety dropped significantly. Looking
back, Neha realised a profound truth about mental health treatment:
therapy did not magically fix her life or change her personality
overnight. Instead, it gave her the practical tools and the quiet
courage to finally live differently.
